    What it does

SmartVisuals Box Plot is a box-and-whisker chart built to be trusted. Quartiles default to the Excel / DAX PERCENTILE.INC definition, with Tukey's hinges and all nine Hyndman-Fan types one setting away and the method named in the footnote. Four whisker rules, outliers and far outliers marked by shape, the points behind each box, reference lines, Split By, sorting by statistic, a log scale and a frequency input for large tables are all free, along with a smart caption that states the finding.

Premium answers the question a box plot raises: is this group really different? Significance brackets or letters, notched boxes and mean confidence intervals, survey weights, spec limits with capability indices per group, and small multiples. Every premium feature previews free in edit mode, and readers without a licence always see the free box plot, never a blocked or watermarked visual. All statistics run inside the visual; it makes no external calls.

How do I make a box plot in Power BI?

Power BI has never shipped a native box-and-whisker chart. The usual workarounds are a stacked column chart with hand-built quartile measures, or a scripting visual that someone has to maintain. Both break the moment a slicer changes the data, and neither tells the reader how the quartiles were computed.

SmartVisuals Box Plot draws the box plot directly. Map a Group, a Sample / ID for the observation grain (a measurement or order ID) and a Value measure, and every group gets its box, whiskers, outliers, a mean marker and n underneath, with the individual observations drawn behind the box. A smart caption states the finding in one sentence, such as the group with the highest median, and a methods footnote names how the numbers were computed.

Why do box plot quartiles differ from DAX PERCENTILE.INC?

There are at least nine definitions of a sample quartile, and on small groups they give visibly different boxes. A chart that silently uses one definition while your measures use another will disagree with your own numbers. SmartVisuals Box Plot defaults to the definition behind Excel and DAX PERCENTILE.INC and QUARTILE.INC, so the box agrees with the model.

The exclusive definition (PERCENTILE.EXC), Tukey's hinges and all nine Hyndman-Fan types are one setting away, and the footnote always names the one in use. Reference lines for the mean, the median and up to four percentiles use the same method, so a P25 line sits exactly on the lower hinge. A typed reference line, such as a target, can be added on top.

Which whisker rule should I use, and how are outliers marked?

Four whisker rules are free: 1.5 x IQR with any multiple, percentiles, mean +/- SD, and minimum to maximum. With the IQR, percentile and SD rules, whiskers end on the most extreme observation inside the fences, and everything outside is an outlier.

Outliers are drawn as hollow triangles and far outliers, beyond 3 x IQR from the box, as filled triangles. No theme draws ordinary points as triangles, so an outlier reads by shape and never by colour alone. Behind each box a beeswarm, jitter or strip shows every observation; hover a point for its ID and click it to filter the rest of the report to that unit (for boxes of up to 2,500 points; larger boxes draw their points as one image).

Can a Power BI box plot handle millions of rows?

Power BI sends up to 30,000 rows per window, and the visual fetches further windows up to 150,000 rows, with the host's warning icon when the data reaches the cap. For larger tables, put the value itself in Value (as column) with a Count measure: each distinct value arrives once and is expanded inside the visual, so a million observations can arrive as a few thousand rows and the quartiles are identical to row input.

Split By a second field for side-by-side boxes, for example shifts within each line, sort groups by median, mean, spread or n, hide groups below a minimum size, draw the boxes horizontally or vertically, and switch to a logarithmic scale for skewed values.

How do I test whether box plot groups are significantly different?

Two boxes that look apart may still be noise. Premium adds significance between groups: Welch t or Mann-Whitney U tests, adjusted with Holm or Bonferroni, and an overall Welch's ANOVA, one-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test, drawn as brackets with stars or as A / B / C letters. Notched boxes and mean confidence intervals show the uncertainty around each median and mean.

Premium also adds a Weight field for survey and sampling weights (weighted quartiles, means and Welch tests with the Kish effective sample size), spec limits typed or from measures with Cp, Cpk, Cpl, Cpu, Cpm, Pp and Ppk per group, and small multiples. Every statistic is golden-tested against independent reference implementations, and degenerate cases show n/a, never a false result.

Box Plot or the full Distribution visual?

SmartVisuals Box Plot is the single-view edition at $1.99 per user per month or $19 per user per year, with the first month free, through Microsoft Marketplace. SmartVisuals Distribution, at $4.49 per user per month or $45 per user per year, adds violin, raincloud, ridgeline, beeswarm and histogram views over the same fields, with the same premium layer. Licences do not carry across offers.

For box plots alone this edition is the cheaper choice; from three chart types on, the multi-view is. Either way, every premium feature previews free while you edit, and readers without a licence always see the free box plot, never a blocked or watermarked visual.

    Use cases

Where Box Plot earns its place.

    Cycle time by production line

A quality engineer maps Line to Group, the unit or batch ID to Sample / ID and cycle time to Value. Each line gets its box, whiskers and outliers with the units drawn behind it, and Layout > Sort Groups By > Median puts the slowest line first. Outliers show as hollow triangles and far outliers as filled ones, and hovering a point names the unit behind it.

Delivery times by carrier and region

Logistics maps Carrier to Group, Region to Split By and the shipment ID to Sample / ID, so each carrier gets one box per region side by side with a legend. Statistic Lines > Percentile Lines set to 90 draws the P90 delivery time the service level is measured on, computed with the chart's own quartile method.

    Process capability per line

With the licence, the Spec Limits & Capability card adds lower and upper spec limits and a target, typed or from LSL, USL and Spec Target measures that follow slicers, and shows Cp, Cpk, Cpl, Cpu, Cpm, Pp and Ppk per group. Compare Groups adds Welch t or Mann-Whitney U tests between lines, shown as brackets with stars or as letters.

    Millions of lab measurements

Instead of the raw rows, put the measured value itself in Value (as column) and a row count in Count. Each distinct value arrives once with its frequency and is expanded inside the visual, so a large table arrives as a few thousand rows and the quartiles are the same as with row input.

    Getting started

From empty canvas to first chart.

    1. 01

Map a Group, a Sample / ID for the observation grain and a Value measure. Each group gets its box, the points behind it, a mean marker and n.

    2. 02

Choose the quartile definition and whisker rule in the format pane; the footnote names both.

    3. 03

Add a Split By field for side-by-side boxes, reference lines for mean, median or percentiles, and sort the groups by a statistic.

    4. 04

    Arrow keys
Right or Down moves to the next box, Left or Up to the previous one. With Split By, each part of a group is its own box.
    Home / End
Jumps to the first or the last box.

    • Screen readers

The chart is labelled with its smart caption. As the arrow keys move, a polite announcement reads the focused box with its median, quartiles and number of observations, for example "Line A: median 12.40, quartiles 10.85 to 14.10, n 48". This announcement is in English in every report language for now.

    • Not colour alone

Outliers are drawn as hollow triangles and far outliers (beyond 3 x IQR) as filled triangles, a shape no theme uses for ordinary points, so an outlier reads by shape. The mean has its own marker shape (diamond by default), and the focused box gets a dashed focus ring.

    • High contrast

In Windows high contrast mode every mark uses the contrast theme's foreground colour: boxes become outlines, points are drawn hollow and fills are dropped.

    • Context menu

Right-clicking a box, or a point in a group of up to 2,500 points, opens the Power BI context menu for it; right-clicking elsewhere opens it for the visual.

Boxes, points, outliers, every quartile definition and whisker rule, Split By, sorting, reference lines, the frequency input, caption, footnote, themes and accessibility are free. Premium adds significance between groups, notches and confidence intervals, weights, spec limits with capability indices and small multiples for $1.99 per user per month or $19 per user per year, with the first month free, through Microsoft Marketplace.

Never. Unlicensed readers always see the free box plot in full; premium parts are simply not applied, and the footnote names the premium features not shown. The visual never blocks a report and never shows a watermark, and every premium feature previews free in edit mode.

Yes, by default. The box uses the definition behind DAX and Excel PERCENTILE.INC unless you pick another, and the footnote always names the definition in use.

Without a Sample / ID field, Power BI sums the values per group. Map the observation grain, such as a measurement or order ID, to Sample / ID and the visual receives every observation; it shows a hint when this field is missing.

No. SmartVisuals Box Plot is complete on its own. SmartVisuals Distribution, the multi-view edition at $4.49 per user per month, adds violin, raincloud, ridgeline, beeswarm and histogram views over the same fields. Licences do not carry across offers, so for box plots alone this edition is cheaper.

No. The visual requests no privileges, makes no external calls and loads no web fonts; every statistic is computed inside your report.

Power BI sends 30,000 rows per data window and the visual fetches further windows up to 150,000 rows, with a warning icon when it reaches that cap. For larger tables, put the value itself in Value (as column) with a Count measure: each distinct value arrives once and the quartiles are the same as with row input. Above 2,500 points per box the points are drawn as one image without per-point tooltips, and above 6,000 an even sample of them is drawn; the statistics always use all the data.

With the 1.5 x IQR, percentile and SD whisker rules, values outside the whiskers are outliers, drawn as hollow triangles; far outliers, more than 3 x IQR from the box, are filled triangles (Box > Mark Far Outliers). The minimum-to-maximum rule has no outliers by definition.

Yes. The chart is one tab stop labelled with its smart caption: the arrow keys move between boxes, Home and End jump to the ends, Page Up and Page Down move by ten, Enter or Space filters the report (Ctrl adds) and Esc clears. A polite announcement reads each box's median, quartiles and n, in English for now. Outliers are marked by shape, and Windows high contrast is supported.

English and Czech, for the format pane, the caption, the footnote and the notes.

Yes. In the Power BI Service, licensed readers see the premium features and others see the free box plot. Where Power BI tells the visual that licences cannot be checked, for example in Power BI Embedded, Publish to web or Power BI Report Server, the premium features stay on rather than lock anyone out.

Each group shows a single value instead of a box.
Without Sample / ID, Power BI sums the values per group and the visual receives one number per box; it shows a hint saying so. Map the observation grain, such as a measurement, order or unit ID, to Sample / ID, or use Value (as column) with a Count measure.
A warning says "Showing part of the data".
Power BI sends 30,000 rows per data window and the visual fetches further windows up to 150,000 rows. Above that, statistics are computed on the rows received and the warning says so. Put the value itself in Value (as column) with a Count measure so each distinct value is sent once, or filter the page.
The quartiles do not match Excel QUARTILE.EXC, Minitab or R.
Statistics > Quartile Method defaults to Excel / DAX inclusive (PERCENTILE.INC, type 7). Pick Excel / DAX exclusive (PERCENTILE.EXC, also Minitab and SPSS), Tukey's hinges (R fivenum) or any of the other Hyndman-Fan types to match your reference. The footnote names the method in use.
Hovering a point shows no tooltip, or points cannot be clicked.
When a box has more than 2,500 points, its points are drawn as one image to stay fast, without per-point tooltips or selection; the box itself keeps its tooltip and still filters the report. Above 6,000 points per box, an even sample is drawn, while every statistic still uses all the data.
Significance, notches, Cpk or small multiples disappear in reading view.
These are premium. They render in full while you edit; readers without a licence see the free box plot and a footnote line naming the premium features not shown. Assign the reader a licence in the Microsoft 365 admin center under Billing > Licenses.
Cp, Cpk and control limits are missing while Pp and Ppk show.
Within-subgroup capability needs the individual observations in production order, from Sample / ID. With Value (as column) and Count the visual only has frequencies, so it shows Pp, Ppk and Cpm and the footnote says why.
    There is no legend.
The legend appears when a Split By field is mapped, because only then do colours need explaining; the Group axis already names each box.
