    What it does

SmartVisuals Scoreboard turns any A-vs-B comparison into a sports-style match, fed straight from your data model. Bind sides and a score, or just two measures, and get a broadcast match page: logos, codes and huge scores, the lead as an arrow and a sentence, a period linescore, momentum per period, mirrored stats for extra measures and an events feed where every deal or shipment arrives as a goal.

Four layouts cover every screen: match centre, TV score bug, stadium LED board with seven-segment digits, and a league table built from match results. It is completely free: no licence, no premium tier, no watermark, and it never blocks your report. It is fully offline, with no external calls, no telemetry and fonts built in.

How do I build a head-to-head scoreboard in Power BI?

Bind a Side field (plant, team, region, person) and a Score measure, and the SmartVisuals Scoreboard plays them as a match: big scores, who leads and by how much, and the match title taken from your real data, such as "Plzeň vs Brno". The first score measure is the score; further measures are compared as mirrored stats underneath, each with the better side marked.

No side field at all? Two or more measures play each other instead, so This year vs Last year or Actual vs Target becomes a match with the codes TY / LY or ACT / TGT. The lead is always shown as an arrow and a sentence ("PLZ LEADS BY 1,250" or "TIED"), never by colour alone.

Can a sales or production challenge run on a wall screen?

Yes, that is what it is built for. Add a Match field and the board pages through the fixtures (hover or P pauses), and Start and End dates drive a game clock that counts down to the whistle or runs the match minute, then reads FINAL or FULL TIME with the winner marked. An Event field turns every deal, order or shipment into a goal in the events feed, newest first.

Scores roll like an odometer only when the data actually changes, a new event or a new leader gets a single gentle celebration band, and an optional one-pixel drift every five minutes protects OLED screens from burn-in. Text grows with the screen, so the board stays readable from across the room.

What if lower is better, like defects or handle time?

Every measure has its own direction. Set lower is better for defects, scrap, cost or handle time and that measure's winner flips; when the score measure is lower-is-better, it decides the match that way. A tie margin, absolute or percent, calls a draw when the gap is within it, and the lead can read as an amount, a percent of the runner-up, or both.

With several score measures, scoring by measures won turns them into games: a plant that wins output and quality but loses safety leads 2-1. Blanks are not zeros: a side with no score shows a dash and never leads.

Are ratios like OEE added up or averaged?

Averaged. With a Period or Event field bound, each cell combines rows by the measure's rule (sum, average, latest, max or min), and auto averages percentage-formatted measures instead of adding rates. A ratio the model forgot to format, such as an OEE of 0.873, is shown as 87.3% and averaged across periods too, and the Measures card in the format pane says so; Show As overrides it.

With no Period or Event bound, every score comes straight from your model, so any DAX measure is exact.

Can I build a league table from match results?

Yes. With a Match field the League table layout builds standings from the results: position, played, won, drawn, lost, for, against, goal difference and points, plus the form guide of the last five results in letters and top and bottom zones named in a text legend. Points per result are configurable. Without matches, it shows standings by total with the period columns and the gap to the leader.

How do team logos work without web calls?

Bind a Logo column with one picture per side as a base64 image data URI (data:image/png;base64,...), built in Power Query with Binary.ToText, and the logos appear on every layout. Web addresses are never loaded, so nothing leaves the report. A value that is not an image, or is cut off by the text limit, is named in the format pane instead of failing silently.

    Use cases

    Where Scoreboard earns its place.

Plant against plant in a monthly shipping challenge

An operations team maps Plant to Side, a Units Shipped measure to Score, Week to Period and the order number to Event with its timestamp in Event Time. A Start and End measure for the challenge window drive the clock. The wall screen shows both plants' totals, "PLZ LEADS BY 1,250", a weekly linescore and every new order arriving in the events feed, newest first.

Revenue this year against last year

Finance leaves Side empty and puts Revenue This Year and Revenue Last Year in Score. The two measures play each other: the title reads "Revenue · This Year vs Last Year", the short codes are TY and LY, and the lead is the gap in revenue. Set Numbers > Display to Compact (1.2K) for a small tile, or let Layout > Auto pick the Score bug when the tile is short.

Production lines where fewer defects wins

Quality maps Line to Side and a Defects measure to Score, then turns on Measures > Defects > Lower Is Better. The line with fewer defects leads, the arrow points at it, and with Layout set to LED board the result reads like a stadium display. A Tie Margin under Match Rules calls a draw when two lines are within a few defects of each other.

A plant duel on several KPIs at once

Two plants on Side, with Units Shipped, OEE, Scrap Rate and On-Time Delivery in Score. The first measure is the headline; the others appear as mirrored stats underneath with the better side marked, and Scrap Rate is set to Lower Is Better. Switch Match Rules > Score to Measures won and a plant that wins three of the four KPIs leads 3-1.

A league table from a season of fixtures

A results table with one row per plant per fixture: Fixture on Match, Plant on Side, Units Shipped on Score. Layout > League table builds the standings with played, won, drawn, lost, for, against, goal difference, points and the form guide. Match Rules sets the points per result and names a top and bottom zone, such as Cup final and Improvement plan.

Sales teams on an office TV

Region on Side, Revenue on Score and Week on Match, so the board pages through each week's fixtures on its own (Paging and Screen > Seconds Per Match). Hovering the board or pressing P pauses it. On an always-on OLED screen, Burn-In Guard (Shift 1 px) moves the board by one pixel every five minutes.

    Getting started

From empty canvas to first chart.

    1. 01

Map a competitor column to Side and a measure to Score. The match centre shows the scores and who leads. Or skip Side and map two measures to Score to play them against each other.

    2. 02

Add Period for the linescore and momentum, and Event with Event Time to turn rows into goals in the events feed.

    3. 03

Add a Match field to page through fixtures and build the league table, and Start and End for the game clock.

    4. 04

Pick a layout and theme, set lower is better or a tie margin per measure, and you're done. Everything is free.

    • Screen readers

The board is labelled with the title, the clock, each side's score and the lead sentence, plus the page number and the keyboard help. A hidden table carries the period linescore. Lead changes ("Plzeň takes the lead"), new events and page changes are announced as they happen.

    • High contrast

In Windows high contrast the board uses the system colours, hides the per-side colour pickers and ignores the transparent background setting. Your own colours come back when high contrast is off.

    • Reduced motion

When the system asks for reduced motion, scores change without the odometer roll and the celebration band is not shown. Screen-reader announcements of goals and lead changes still happen.

    • Not colour alone

The leader is marked by an arrow toward them or "=" when tied, and by a sentence such as "PLZ LEADS BY 1,250"; results read as W, D and L in the form guide, and table zones are named in a text legend.

    Questions

    Asked before you did.

More questions? See support or write to hello@smartvisuals.io.

Yes. The whole visual is free: no licence, no plan, no premium tier and no watermark. It never blocks your report and behaves identically in edit mode, reading view, Desktop and the Service.

A Side field (plant, team, region, person) and a Score measure are enough. Score takes up to eight measures: the first is the score, the rest become mirrored stats. Match, Period, Event with Event Time, Start, End and Logo are optional, and Tooltips takes up to eight extra measures.

Yes. With no Side field, two or more score measures become the sides, so This year vs Last year or Actual vs Target plays as a match.

Layout > Auto picks by size and data: the match centre on a normal tile, the score bug on a short or small tile, and the league table for more than four sides without a Match field. You can fix the choice to Match centre, Score bug, LED board or League table, and Style > Boardroom (plain) drops the segments, glow and animation.

Turn on Lower Is Better for that measure in the Measures card. The side with the lower value wins that measure, and when it is the score measure it decides the match. A Tie Margin in Match Rules, absolute or a percent of the higher score, calls a draw when the gap is within it.

Yes. With a Match field it pages through the fixtures every 12 seconds by default (Paging and Screen > Seconds Per Match); hovering the board or pressing P pauses it. Start and End drive a countdown or the match minute, then FINAL or FULL TIME. Burn-In Guard moves the board by one pixel every five minutes for OLED screens.

Up to 30,000 rows, the largest data window Power BI gives a visual in one go. With more rows the board uses the first 30,000 and shows a warning icon that says so; filter the page or bind fewer fields to include everything.

No. The visual is fully offline: no external calls, no telemetry, no browser storage and no privileges. Fonts are embedded, and logos come from data URIs in your model; web addresses are never loaded.

Yes. Leads, results and zones never rest on colour alone. The visual is one keyboard tab stop with arrow-key navigation, has a screen-reader summary and a live announcement when the lead changes, and supports high contrast and reduced motion.

    Troubleshooting

When it does not look right.

Found a bug or missing something? Post it on the requests board or vote for what others asked; the developer answers within two business days.

I put This Year and Last Year in Score, but the board shows one score per region instead of the two years against each other.
When a Side field is bound, each Side value is a competitor and only the first Score measure is the score; further measures become stats underneath. To play two measures against each other, remove the field from Side. If only one measure is bound and there is no Side, the board asks you to add a second side or a second measure.
With Period bound, a score is much higher than the same measure in a card, or a percentage is over 100%.
With a Period or Event field bound, the board combines the period rows itself. Auto adds numbers up and averages percentages, but a distinct count, an average or a balance such as stock or headcount does not add up across periods. Open Measures, pick the measure's group and set Combine Periods By to Average, Latest or Maximum. Without Period or Event, every score is exactly what your model returns.
A side shows a dash instead of a score, or a side called (Blank) appears.
A dash means the measure returned blank for that side in the current filter context. Blanks are not treated as zero, so that side never leads and goes to the bottom of the standings. A side named (Blank) means some rows have an empty Side value; filter them out on the visual or give them a name in the model.
The periods in the linescore are in the wrong order.
Dates and numbers always sort ascending. Text periods keep the order Power BI sends, so a fiscal year sorted with Sort by column stays as you sorted it. If the text is only sorted alphabetically, the board puts month names in calendar order and numbered labels in natural order (W2 before W10). For anything else, set Sort by column on the period column in the model or bind a date column instead.
The logos do not appear, and Logos > Show Logos says some are not shown.
The Logo field takes a base64 image data URI per side, such as data:image/png;base64,... built in Power Query. Web addresses are never loaded, and an image longer than 32,766 characters arrives cut off, so keep images to about 20 KB (64 to 128 px). The description under Show Logos names the reason for the first refused value. Logos also need a Side field; with two measures as sides there is nothing to attach them to.
I expected the match centre but got a small score bug or a league table.
Layout > Auto chooses by size and data: a tile under 220 px high, or narrower than 360 px and under 320 px high, gets the Score bug, and more than four sides without a Match field get the League table. Pick Match centre, Score bug, LED board or League table in Layout > Layout to fix the choice. Style > Boardroom (plain) shows the LED board as the match centre.
In Windows high contrast mode my side colours are gone and the Sides card is missing.
This is on purpose. In high contrast the board uses the system colours, so the per-side colour pickers are hidden. The lead is still shown by the arrow and the words, results by letters, and zones by name. Your colours come back when high contrast is turned off.
The board is missing from a PDF or PowerPoint export, or from a subscription email.
Power BI includes a custom visual in PDF and PowerPoint exports and in subscription emails only after Microsoft has certified it, and Scoreboard is not certified yet. Until then, share the live report or take a screenshot of the board.
