Power BI leaderboard with rank numbers, a podium, logos, movement arrows, streaks and personal bests
Pl. XVIII  ·  Leaderboard  ·  Ranked rows with a podium and logos from an Entrant, a Value and a Period, no DAX; movement, streaks and personal bests are Premium.rendered from the shipped visual
    What it does

Teams put a leaderboard on a screen because a rank is the one number everybody understands without training. Usually they either hand-build a ranked table that looks like a spreadsheet, or they pay a separate gamification platform per user per month and export their Power BI data into it. SmartVisuals Leaderboard keeps the board where the numbers already are. Bind an Entrant and a Value and you have a board: real rank numbers, a podium, medals, named tie rules, row images with an initials fallback and top N with an Others row, all free.

The premium licence adds the analysis: rank movement against a comparison period that survives every slicer, streaks, personal bests and a rank history chart, ranking by percent of target with race analytics, the viewer's own row, grouped standings, cut-off lines and wall mode for the screen across the room. Every premium feature previews free in edit mode, and viewers without a licence always see the complete free board, never a blocked visual or a watermark. Everything runs inside Power BI; the visual makes no external calls.

How do I build a leaderboard in Power BI without RANKX?

The usual route is a table visual and a RANKX measure, and a competent analyst gets most of the way there. What it does badly is everything around the rank: ties that come out differently from what the board prints, movement that falls apart the moment somebody touches a slicer, photos squeezed into a tiny cell, and a result that still looks like a spreadsheet on the screen across the room.

SmartVisuals Leaderboard does the ranking inside the visual. Bind an Entrant and a Value and you have a board with real rank numbers, a podium for the top three, medals and value bars. With the licence, bind a Period and it works out movement, streaks and personal bests by itself. No RANKX, no CALCULATE, no disconnected tables.

How are ties ranked on a Power BI leaderboard?

Ties are a setting with a name, not a side effect of a formula. Choose competition (1, 2, 2, 4), modified competition (1, 3, 3, 4), dense (1, 2, 2, 3) or ordinal (no ties), and the board can show the rule to the reader in its header. Two rows on 1,240 are both 5= and the board says so, with a tie marker you can switch to another character or turn off.

Ties are detected on the value the board prints. If two rows both show 980 after rounding, they share a place unless you say otherwise, so a reader never sees two equal numbers with different ranks. Every tie rule is part of the free tier.

    Can rank movement survive slicers?

Yes. Both states arrive as bound data, either a Comparison value next to the Value or a Period field, so both rankings come out of the same filter context in the same update. Filter to one region and every arrow, NEW badge and dropout is recalculated for that region. The report author writes no CALCULATE.

With a Period bound, the licence adds streaks, personal bests, the biggest mover, a rank sparkline per row and a rank history chart that draws every period's standings as lines, so you see who climbed and who fell over the whole window, not just against last month. When a slicer narrows the data to one period, those elements hide and the header note says why.

How do I rank sales territories of different size fairly?

Bind a Target and every row shows its percent to goal, with a target marker on the bar, in the free tier. With the licence you can rank by percent of target or by change instead of by the raw value, so every territory races its own goal rather than the biggest one winning by default.

Race analytics then answer the questions a sales team asks: the gap to the leader, what is still missing to the qualifying line, the pace a target still needs, Gold, Silver and Bronze tiers, and the projected finish. Highest wins or lowest wins is a free setting too, so defects, response times or costs rank with the smallest number on top.

Can each viewer see their own row?

Bind a measure such as [Rep email] = USERPRINCIPALNAME() to Is me and every viewer finds their own row highlighted, kept on screen and summed up in the header: "You: place 14 of 23, 22 behind place 13". Rows can also be pinned so the ones that matter stay in view on a long board.

This is the question every person on a leaderboard actually asks, and it is part of the premium licence together with grouped standings and cut-off lines for promotion and relegation.

How do I show a leaderboard on a TV screen?

Wall mode sets large type, pages automatically through a long list with a page indicator, and hides the chrome, so the board reads from across the sales floor or the plant. A click, a scroll or a key press pauses it for 30 seconds, and a pinned row stays on screen on every page. Wall mode is part of the premium licence; without it, the same report shows the ordinary desk board.

Quick styles set a league table, a sales-floor TV, a lowest-wins board, an executive top ten or a compact table in one click, and the four themes, SmartVisuals, Dark, Clean and Slate, change the numerals, the row treatment, the bar style and the movement glyphs rather than just the colour.

    Use cases

    Where Leaderboard earns its place.

    Sales-floor leaderboard on a TV

A sales manager maps the rep's name to Entrant, revenue this month to Value and a column of photos as data: URIs to Image, then picks Board > Quick style > Sales floor TV. The free board shows real rank numbers, a podium and medals; with the licence, Wall mode adds large type, automatic paging with a page indicator and no chrome, and a Period field adds movement against last month.

Plant safety league where lowest wins

An operations team ranks plants by lost-time incidents or defects per million. Ranking > Winner is > Lowest value wins puts the smallest number on top, and the Lowest wins quick style sets up the board for it. Ties are a named rule (competition, modified competition, dense or ordinal), detected on the value the board prints, so two plants showing 0.8 share a place.

    Territory race to target

Map Region to Entrant, revenue to Value and the regional target to Target. Every row shows its percent to goal and a target marker on the bar in the free tier. With the licence, Ranking > Rank by > Percent of target lets every territory race its own goal, and Race analytics add the gap to the leader, the pace a target still needs (with a Period progress measure) and Gold, Silver and Bronze tiers.

Every rep finds their own row

Bind a measure such as [Rep email] = USERPRINCIPALNAME() to Is me. With the licence, each viewer's row is highlighted, kept in view and summed up in the header ("You: place 14 of 23"), so one published board serves the whole team. Group adds team colour chips for free; grouped standings and cut-off lines for promotion and relegation are premium.

    Getting started

From empty canvas to first chart.

    1. 01

Map a name to Entrant and a measure to Value. The board ranks them with real rank numbers, a podium and medals.

    2. 02

Pick a tie rule, highest or lowest wins, a quick style and a theme in the format pane; add an Image column of data: URIs and a Target for percent to goal.

    3. 03

Bind a Period or a Comparison value for movement, streaks and personal bests, and an Is me measure for the viewer's own row.

    4. 04

Switch on wall mode, grouped standings or cut-off lines to try Premium; everything previews in full while you edit.

    Home / End
Jumps to the first or the last row.

    Shift+F10 or the context-menu key

    • Screen readers

The board is exposed as a grid with its row count. Each row is announced with its rank, the total, the name and the value, for example "Rank 3 of 23. Plzeň. 1,240.", says when the place is tied and adds the movement in words (up 2, no change, new entry) when movement is shown. The Others row reads how many entrants it stands for and the ranks it covers, and cut-off lines are labelled separators. When the data changes, a polite announcement says the board was updated and how many rows it has; it stays quiet in wall mode.

    • Accessibility card

The format pane has an Accessibility card: Focus ring colour and Focus ring width, a Minimum font size for the text on the board, and Spell movement out in text, which replaces the movement number with words such as "up 4".

    • Not colour alone

Movement is drawn as an up, down or flat glyph shape, with the number of places when Show places gained is on, and new entries carry a NEW badge when it is on, so movement never rests on colour alone. A tied place is marked next to the rank (5=) unless the tie marker is turned off.

    • High contrast

In Windows high contrast mode the board uses the foreground, background and selection colours of the contrast theme instead of the theme and report colours.

    • Reduced motion

When the operating system asks for reduced motion, rows no longer animate into their new places and wall mode changes pages without a transition; the Animation card then has no effect.

    • Wall mode

With Pause when someone interacts on (the default), a click, a scroll or a key press holds the automatic paging for 30 seconds.

    • Languages

The board is written in English or Czech (Language > Board language follows Power BI by default), and the format pane is available in both.

The free tier is a complete board: ranks, every tie rule, row images, podium and medals, value bars, percent to goal, top N with Others, all four themes, quick styles, conditional colours, cross-filtering, keyboard navigation, high contrast and both languages. Premium adds movement and history, rank by and race analytics, the viewer's own row and pinned rows, wall mode, grouped standings and cut-off lines for $2.99 per user per month through Microsoft Marketplace.

Never. Unlicensed viewers always see the complete free board, with no watermark, no lock icons and no broken visual. When a premium feature is not available the board simply reflows as if that setting were switched off: movement collapses, grouped standings become one ranking and a wall board renders as the desk board. Every premium feature previews free in edit mode.

No. The visual ranks the values it receives and, with a Period or a Comparison value bound, computes movement from both states in the same filter context, so it survives every slicer without a CALCULATE.

Bind a column of inline data: URIs to Image. Images render at any size you set, in a circle, rounded or square, with an initials fallback for a missing photo. Web URLs are refused and Power BI shows one warning explaining why.

Licences are per user, bought on Microsoft Marketplace and assigned in the Microsoft 365 admin center: no licence keys and no vendor portal.

No. The visual makes no external calls of any kind: no fetch, no telemetry, and images are inline data: URIs only. Everything runs inside your report.

Entrant (the name on each row) and Value (what entrants are ranked by) are enough for a full board. Optional fields: Comparison value or Period for movement, Image for photos or logos, Group for colour chips and grouped standings, Subtitle for a second line, Target for percent to goal, Period progress for pace, Is me for the viewer's own row, and Tooltips for extra measures.

A board of 5,000 rows scrolls like a native table, because only the rows in view are drawn. With a Period field, the latest 60 periods are used and a note says so when there are more. Row images can be up to 256 KB each.

Yes. Wall mode (premium) sets large type, pages through a long board with a page indicator and hides the chrome; a click, a scroll or a key press pauses paging for 30 seconds. Without a licence, the same report shows the desk board, which you can still put on a screen.

Yes. The board is one tab stop: Up and Down move between rows, Home and End jump to the ends, Enter or Space cross-filters, Esc clears and Shift+F10 opens the context menu. Screen readers hear each row's rank, name, value, tie and movement. The Accessibility card sets the focus ring, a minimum font size and movement spelled out in words, and the board follows Windows high contrast and reduced motion.

When it does not look right.

Found a bug or missing something? Post it on the requests board or vote for what others asked; the developer answers within two business days.

There are no movement arrows, streaks or rank history.
Movement needs a second state of the board: bind a Comparison value next to the Value, or a Period field with at least two periods in view. If a slicer narrows the data to one period, the board says "One period in view - movement needs two". Movement, streaks, personal bests and the rank history chart are premium: they show in edit mode, and readers without a licence see the board without them.
A note says "The Period is used; the Comparison value is ignored".
Both a Period field and a Comparison value are bound, and the board can only compare one way. With a Period, movement is worked out from the periods in view (Movement > Compare to: previous period, first period in view or a set number of periods back). Remove the field you do not want to use.
Two rows show the same value but different ranks, or the same rank for different values.
Ranking > Two rows tie decides whether ties are found on the displayed value (the default) or the exact value. On the displayed value, two rows that both print 980 share a place even if the model has 979.6 and 980.2; switch to On the exact value to separate them, or show more decimals. Ranking > Tie rule sets how shared places are numbered, and Ranking > Order tied rows by sets their order.
Photos show initials instead of images, or a warning says web-URL images were not loaded.
The Image field takes inline images as data: URIs (for example data:image/png;base64,...), up to 256 KB each. Web addresses are refused because the visual makes no external calls, and the board shows initials instead (Image > Fallback). Convert the photos to data URIs in Power Query or in the source.
Readers see a licence notice and the board without wall mode, movement or grouped standings.
The author switched on a premium feature: movement with a comparison, wall mode, grouped standings, cut-off lines, the focus row or Is me, or race analytics. Readers without a licence get the complete free board, reflowed as if those settings were off, plus one notice from Power BI naming what needs a licence. Assign a licence in the Microsoft 365 admin center, or switch the premium settings off for a free board with no notice.
    Wall mode does not page.
Wall mode pages only when there is more than one page (Wall mode > Rows per page), the tile is at least 400 x 300 pixels, and Power BI allows interaction, so a dashboard tile never pages. With Pause when someone interacts on, a click, a scroll or a key press holds the paging for 30 seconds.
