Sixteen sales rep cards in Power BI with photos, revenue, win rate, new clients and deals won, ranked and tiered Legendary to Common
Pl. XXXV  ·  Trading Cards  ·  Premium: a sales team of 16, ranked and tiered, with target status marks and Anna Schmidt as My card.rendered from the shipped visual
    What it does

SmartVisuals Trading Cards turns each rep, product or branch into a card: a photo, revenue, win rate, new clients and deals won, each ranked against the whole deck as a percentile with a bar and a rank such as "3rd of 24". The card earns a rarity tier from those percentiles (Common, Rare, Epic or Legendary), flips over for every stat with its rank, and can be played head to head against another card or the team average.

The numbers are the ones you can defend: ties share a percentile, Lower Is Better works per stat, a missing value is "no data" and never zero, and the status strip names how many cards the percentiles compare. Up to 5 cards are free with the full format; a SmartVisuals Trading Cards licence adds the whole team, targets, My card, the Duel and more. No external calls, no telemetry, no browser storage.

How do I show a sales team as cards in Power BI?

Bind the rep name to Card and one to eight measures to Stats, such as Revenue, Win Rate, New Clients and Deals Won. Each rep becomes a card with the stats on the front, every stat ranked against the whole team as a percentile with a bar, and a rank such as "3rd of 16" on the back. Set (the region or team) adds the set line, a set colour and a row of chips that filter the deck; Picture or Picture (Measure) adds a photo, and a rep without one gets a monogram crest.

The same visual works for products, branches or stores: anything you would put in the rows of a ranked table. The cards hold the numbers you would show in that table, but each entity reads as one profile, and the tier word says in one glance where it stands in the group.

How are the percentile, the power score and the tier computed?

For each stat, a card's percentile is the share of cards with a worse value plus half the cards with an equal value, so ties share a percentile and a rep is never ranked above a colleague with the same number. Turn on Stats > Lower Is Better for days to close, returns or cost, and the direction flips for that stat only. The calculation is tested against a reference statistics library.

The power score is the average of a card's stat percentiles, 0 to 100, with Stats > Weight In Power Score per stat (0 = shown but not counted). The tier follows from the card's rank in the deck by default, or from the power score itself (Tiers > Tier By): Legendary from the 90th percentile, Epic from the 70th, Rare from the 40th, Common below. Each tier has its own shape, number of pips and word, so it reads without colour.

What happens with missing values and small teams?

A stat with no value for a card is shown as "–" and counted nowhere: not in a percentile, not in the power score, not in a duel. It is never turned into a zero. A card with no stat at all is Unranked and follows the ranked cards.

The status strip under the deck names the base, such as "Percentiles among 16 cards", says how the power score and the tier are computed, and warns when fewer than 5 cards are ranked, because a tier among four reps says little. With a History field, Stats > Combine Periods By decides how the periods add up: Auto sums numbers and averages percentages, and Average, Latest, Maximum or Minimum suit stocks and rates.

How do I add photos of my sales reps?

The visual draws pictures only from image data URIs (data:image/png;base64,...) and never loads a web address, because it makes no external calls. Small pictures, under about 20 kB, fit in a Picture column built in Power Query. Real photos are larger than the 32,766 characters Power BI keeps in a text column, so the Picture (Measure) field takes the picture from a measure instead, up to 2,000,000 characters per card.

The sample report has the recipe: Power Query reads a folder or a SharePoint library of photos at refresh and splits each one into 30,000-character chunks, and a CONCATENATEX measure joins them back for the rep in context. A value the visual cannot use is refused with a named reason under Card Face > Show Picture, and the card draws its crest.

Deck, Spotlight, Duel or Boardroom: which layout fits?

Deck is a grid of cards for a team page. Spotlight shows one large card with its back beside it and a strip of small cards to step through, for a meeting where the team goes rep by rep. Duel (premium) puts two cards face to face, stat by stat, with the winner of each stat, the gap in the stat's own format and in percentile points, and the tally on top; the right-hand side can be a chosen card, the top performer or the team average.

Layout > Style > Boardroom (plain table) shows the same deck as a ranked table: number, name, set, tier, power and one column per stat with a thin percentile bar. Same data, same ranks, for the review where cards would feel out of place.

What is free and what needs a licence?

Up to 5 cards are free with the full format: ranks, percentiles, power score and weights, the default tiers, the flip, Spotlight stepped by hand, Boardroom, four themes, Picture (Measure), dynamic format strings, every accessibility feature and 20 languages. With more cards, a reader without a licence sees the first 5 in your sort with the note "Showing 5 of 16", and the numbers on those cards are computed on the whole team, so every viewer sees the same ranks.

Premium covers the team instrument: up to 500 cards, Compare against a target or last year with target status marks, My card, the Duel, custom tiers, History sparklines, Wall mode and the Holo Foil, Vintage and Arcade collector skins. Edit mode previews all of it, and a reader without a licence is never blocked and never sees a watermark.

    Use cases

Where Trading Cards earns its place.

A monthly sales review of the whole team

A sales manager binds Reps[Rep] to Card, Reps[Site] (Chicago, Manchester, Toronto, Hamburg) to Set, and Revenue, Win Rate, New Clients and Deals Won to Stats. Every rep gets a card ranked against the team, with a power score and a tier, and the site chips filter the deck without changing anyone's rank. With Premium, a target per stat in Compare and Compare > Compare Is > A target, plus Target Status Colors, marks each stat met, near or missed.

Each rep sees their own card

Bind a My Card measure such as IF(SELECTEDVALUE(Reps[Email]) = USERPRINCIPALNAME(), 1) (Premium). When Emily Carter opens the report, her card is ringed and marked You, Spotlight opens on it, and in the Duel with Opponent set to Team average she sees her own stats against the average of the whole team, stat by stat.

    A product range review

A product manager binds the product name to Card, the product family (Pumps, Valves, Motors, Controls) to Set and Revenue, Units Sold, Gross Margin, Return Rate and Lead Time (days) to Stats, with Lower Is Better on for Return Rate and Lead Time. Layout > Spotlight shows one product at a time with its back beside it; Style > Boardroom (plain table) turns the same deck into a ranked table for the finance review.

    A team of five, free

A key accounts team of five binds the rep to Card and four measures to Stats. Every feature of the format works for every reader without a licence: ranks, percentiles, power score, the default tiers, the flip, Spotlight stepped by hand, Boardroom and the four themes.

    Getting started

From empty canvas to first chart.

    1. 01

Bind the rep, product or branch name to Card, and one to eight measures to Stats, such as Revenue, Win Rate, New Clients and Deals Won.

    2. 02

Optionally bind Set (region or team), Picture or Picture (Measure) for photos, and Caption for a short line per card.

    3. 03

In Stats, turn on Lower Is Better for stats where less is good, and set Weight In Power Score if some stats should count more.

    4. 04

Pick a Layout (Deck or Spotlight), a Style (Collectible cards or Boardroom) and a Theme; sort by power, name or any stat.

    5. 05

For a team of more than 5, targets, My card, the Duel or Wall mode, try it in edit mode: Premium previews there before you license it.

    • Screen readers

The deck is a list of options labelled with the number of cards and the keys to use. Each card is read with its number, name, set, tier, power score and front stats, including each stat's percentile and target status; when a card is flipped, the back is read with every stat's value, percentile, rank and change. A polite live region announces a flip, the duel result ("Head to head: Anna Schmidt against Team average" with the tally) and when the Wall mode cycle is paused or playing.

    • Not colour alone

Each tier has its own shape (circle, diamond, hexagon, star), number of pips and word. In the Duel the winner of each stat is marked with a triangle and bold text, and target status uses a mark and a word (met, near, missed) as well as colour. Status colours are lifted to at least 4.5:1 against the card face.

    • High contrast

In Windows high contrast mode every theme and skin gives way to the system's foreground and background colours, the focus outline uses the selection colour, and the Colors, Sets and Card Accent cards are hidden; tiers keep their shapes, pips and words.

    • Reduced motion

When reduced motion applies there is no deal-in animation, the flip is an instant face swap, the Holo Foil sheen is static and the Wall mode cycle stops. The visual follows the system setting by default.

    • Accessibility card: Reduce Motion

Follow system setting (default), Always reduce or Off (always animate).

    • Accessibility card: Focus Outline Color and Focus Outline Width (px)

The colour and the width (1 to 8 px, 2.5 by default) of the outline on the focused card. In high contrast mode the system colour is always kept.

    • Accessibility card: Minimum Text Size (px, 0 = Off)

No text in the visual is drawn smaller than this size, up to 32 px. Off by default.

    • Pause control

Whenever the Spotlight cycles, a visible Pause / Play button stops and restarts it (also the P key), and the cycle pauses while the pointer is over the visual or the deck has the keyboard focus.

    • Context menu

Right-clicking a card opens the Power BI context menu for it; right-clicking elsewhere opens it for the visual.

    • Pointer-only controls

The set chips and the toolbar buttons are not tab stops. Flip all and the Duel have their own keys (Shift+F, D); to filter by set with the keyboard, use a slicer on the Set field.

    • Languages

The format pane, the data roles, every word on a card, the tooltips and the screen-reader text are available in 20 languages: English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Slovak, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

Up to 5 cards are free with the full format: ranks, percentiles, power score and weights, default tiers, flip, Spotlight stepped by hand, Boardroom, themes, Picture (Measure), every accessibility feature and 20 languages. Premium adds more than 5 cards (up to 500), Compare with target status colours, My card, the Duel, custom tiers, History, Wall mode and the collector skins for $2.99 per user per month or $29 per user per year, with the first month free, managed in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

The visual has been prepared for Microsoft Marketplace and is not published yet. This page will link to the listing once it is live.

A working visual, never a blocked one and never a watermark. With more than 5 cards they see the first 5 in your sort and the note "Showing 5 of N", with the same ranks, percentiles and tiers a licensed colleague sees. The Duel layout shows the Deck, Compare, target status and History are left out, custom tiers return to the defaults, the You ring is not drawn, a skin falls back to your theme and Wall mode is stepped by hand. Power BI shows one banner whose tooltip names what was withheld; the canvas itself shows no licence text. Edit mode previews everything.

No. The visual makes no external calls, sends no telemetry, uses no browser storage and requests no privileges. Pictures are drawn only from image data URIs inside your data; a web address in a Picture field is never loaded and is named as refused in the format pane. The licence check goes through Power BI itself.

Card (one card per value, such as the rep name) and at least one measure in Stats (up to eight). Optional: Set for the region or team, Picture or Picture (Measure) for a photo, Caption for a short line, Tooltips for up to five extra measures, and with Premium, Compare (a target or prior value per stat, in Stats order), History (a period column) and My Card (a measure that is not zero for the viewer's own card).

Up to 8 stats per card. Free shows up to 5 cards; Premium up to 500, and beyond that the status strip says "500 of N cards shown: narrow the filter". The visual reads up to 30,000 rows and says so in the status strip when it hits that limit. Ranks are always computed on every card in the data, not only the ones drawn.

As "no data", shown as "–". It is never a zero and never enters a percentile, the power score or a duel. A card without any stat value is Unranked and follows the ranked cards.

With Premium, bind a measure such as IF(SELECTEDVALUE(Reps[Email]) = USERPRINCIPALNAME(), 1) to My Card. The card of the signed-in viewer is ringed and marked You, Spotlight opens on it and the Duel puts it on the left. For one fixed card, type its name in My Card > Card Name instead.

The visual draws only image data URIs and refuses web addresses, values that are not images, invalid base64 and values cut off at Power BI's 32,766-character text column limit. Card Face > Show Picture then says how many pictures were not shown and why, and the card draws its crest. For larger photos use Picture (Measure): the sample report has the Power Query and CONCATENATEX recipe.

Yes. The deck is one tab stop: the arrow keys move between cards, Home and End jump to the ends, Enter or Space selects (Ctrl or Shift adds), F flips, Shift+F flips all, D plays a card head to head (Premium) and Escape clears. Every card is labelled with its number, name, set, tier, power and front stats, and the back is read when flipped. Tiers carry a shape and a word, and Windows high contrast and reduced motion are supported.

20: English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Slovak, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish, for the format pane, the data roles, every word on a card, the tooltips and the screen-reader text.

Some viewers only see 5 of our 16 reps, with "Showing 5 of 16" under the cards.
More than 5 cards is a Premium feature. A reader without a licence sees the first 5 in the author's Layout > Sort By order, and their numbers are computed on all 16 reps, so the ranks and tiers match what a licensed colleague sees. Assign a SmartVisuals Trading Cards licence to the reader in the Microsoft 365 admin center. In edit mode the full deck is always shown.
The Duel, the targets or the sparklines show for me but not for my readers.
Edit mode previews every Premium feature. In reading view without a licence the Duel layout shows the Deck, Compare, target status and History are left out, custom tier thresholds and names return to the defaults (90, 70, 40), the You ring is not drawn, a Collector Skin falls back to the chosen Theme and Wall mode is stepped by hand. Power BI shows one banner whose tooltip names what was withheld. The report is never blocked or watermarked.
A photo does not show and the card draws initials instead.
The visual draws only image data URIs (data:image/png;base64,...) and refuses web addresses, values that are not images, invalid base64 and pictures cut off at Power BI's 32,766-character text column limit. Card Face > Show Picture says how many pictures were not shown and why. Use smaller pictures (under about 20 kB) in Picture, or bind a measure to Picture (Measure), which takes up to 2,000,000 characters per card; the sample report has the Power Query and CONCATENATEX recipe for a folder or SharePoint library of photos.
The rep with the shortest days to close is ranked worst.
By default a higher value is better. Open Stats, find the stat under its own name and turn on Lower Is Better. The percentile, the rank, the power score and the duel then treat a smaller value as better for that stat only, and the label shows an arrow.
A rep shows "–" for a stat, and the tiers look different than I expected.
"–" means the stat has no value for that card. It is never counted as zero: the card's power score averages only the stats it has, and other cards' percentiles are computed among the cards that have a value. If the status strip says "Only 4 ranked cards: tiers compare very few cards", the tiers compare fewer than 5 cards and mean little; add cards or widen the filter.
With a History field, win rate or headcount adds up to nonsense.
With History, each card combines its periods per stat by Stats > Combine Periods By. Auto sums plain numbers and averages percentages. A rate, an average or a stock such as headcount does not add up over periods: choose Average, Latest or Maximum for that stat.
